  • Sad to see it go

Recently had to make the decision to let our allotment go as OH can no longer dig etc. am feeling very sad as I've had it for a long time and we both love it. But am turning my attention to garden growing so I might be asking a whole lot of new questions!

Raine I grow in my back garden and find it handy just to nip out now and then to do a bit plus I don't have to go far to gather veg for dinner.

Sad to hear it. woth a bot of organisation and planning you will make the most of your garden space . when you have less space its a game of prioritising...spuds are cheap to buy and need space so go for the more costly veg that uses less space..i really enjoy my garden growing..so close to the kettle, the well, everything is at hand!! No worries of burgulary theft...hope you enjoy it

My problem is, it's a pretty small garden so I'm going to have to think pretty hard about what I grow and what I really love is being able to give lots of veg away! Still never mind, it's a new adventure and needs must. Any advice would be gratefully received!

Sorry to hear you had to give your lottie up Raine, I know you will have put a lot of hard work, time & money into it. If your garden is on the small side, try dabbling with square foot. It may work.

You have made a very unselfish decision. Someone else will get the benefit of you plot whereas if you kept going chances are you wouldn't manage and the plot would go downhill. There are a few on our site limping on, I wish they would bite the bullet and hand back their keys but no we'll have another year of "tidy your plot please" letters and they'll do just enough to keep their plots. You have definitely done the right thing.
Just a thought so you have a neighbour who needs help with their garden? Would extend your growing space.

Thankyou, I have read into square foot gardening and it's something that I've used at school so that might be an option.at the moment, we are. Looking into a sort of kitchen garden , it's just the quantities that are worrying me, plus, we just bought a small poly tunnel and I don't think it will fit I the garden!

A surprising amount can be done in pots, window boxes, hanging baskets and even in the house. Choose fast maturing varieties and you can often get 2 crops from the same space in one year. The key is to plan what you are going to put where and to have new plants ready to follow on with as soon as a crop finishes.

I have to say it is very handy having your plot in the garden and you can do a lot in a small space. You have more security and no one to tell you what or what not to do.

A lottie is totally impractical for me time wise, but I really enjoy growing stuff in my small back garden. Plus, as others have mentioned, it's remarkable what can be grown/achieved in a small space

It's a shame you had to give it up, especially if you both gained enjoyment from having it. You don't have to dig, to grow Veg - there are plenty of people following 'No-dig' methods, which you could research. Anyway, I hope you enjoy growing in your garden, and as others have said, everything is so handy at home. Good luck with it all!

I can see that but, one of the main benefits I get from a lottie is that I'm away from the house and all the stresses of everyday life. Still grow herbs and lettuce at home though for that quick nip out while preparing tea

Like your OH I can't do digging mines a back problem. But it is surprising what can be done in a small space with just containers and a little thought.
