Rust on garlic. Pull up or leave??

    Rust on garlic. Pull up or leave??

    My garlic is quite badly rusty! I've just had a search on here...........it seems its not treatable?
    Should I just leave it till its ready to harvest, or should it be pulled up?? I don't know how far on the garlic is with its bulbing up as I haven't peeped!

    We tend not to get it on garlic, but it always affects our leeks, we just leave them and they're fine.
    Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

      When did you plant the garlic? from Autumn it should be about ready. Have a look; if so, harvest and burn the affected leaves

        Tis a fact of life most years. Let it dry out normally then burn all of the brash left over from when you either plait them or store them singly.

          Sorry, majority autumn, one bulb of Solent Wight spring. So, ignore it then and burn the rubbish when harvesting....and have a look at the autumn planted? Thanks!

            I have the same also, FYI on our leeks we used cheap gin (Old thing we found around somewhere) and it cleared up good an proper

              What do I do, drink it to help me forget about the rust!! or spray the garlic? Does it need tonic mixing with it?!!

                We only drink cheap gin, so what shall I do about the garlic rust on our Solent Wight? Are lots of peeps growing SW and so thats what's affected or is SW particularly prone (if you see what I mean! ).

                Shall I just ignore it at this stage and harvest as normal later on?

                  The rust was so bad on mine, I lifted them at the weekend. I've got enough for my purposes, most have bulbed, even those spring sown.

                        Hi all, thanks for the info on rust, especially the gin ) We have just noticed rust on our winter garlic yesterday. You might be interested to know that apparently a weed called Groundsel can be a real magnet for rust; sadly we have heaps of it lurking in amongst the spuds which we had'nt bothered too much about...until now- oh well, we live and learn! Hope that helps.

                          Ah is that what that is? That's interesting cause have quite a lot of that (Groundsel) growing espesh near the garlic which has just literally in the last few days developed rust. Bulbs look pretty decent though so probably ready to be pulled.
