  • Which Runner Beans

At present i can only grow runner beans in large pots.
So my question is what variety of bean would be best for growimng in pots which would provide tasty good crops

    Many thanks

i would plant a french bean called "hunter " instead, looks like a runner but is stringless and has a lovely taste,to look at it on the plate you would swear it was a runner, and i grow some in pots and get a good crop,it has replaced the stringy beans in our house, just coming to the end of our freezer supplies now,so roll on summer....

You'd swear it was a runner - til you tasted it, it doesn't taste like a runner, if that's what you wanted
All runners can be grown in big tubs - you just have to provide enough support and water them a lot

My fav is White Lady, they stay stringless until they get really big.

As with TS above I recommend White Lady, also Red Rum I grow them as with all my runners in Morrison flower buckets.

16 Plants will allow myself and SWMBO to eat runners at least once a week through out the year.

I would happily agree with the recommendation for White Lady. Another favourite of mine is Celebration; the display value in the abundant salmon pink flowers alone, make this runner a sound investment (and the beans are top quality too).

I think most if not all varieties of runner bean will grow well enough in a container, so long as they are given rich soil, and lots of water.

Concur with the people above regarding White Lady. They have a decent reputation for remaining fruitful during periods of drought, which is why I sowed this variety after the hose pipe ban was announced, just in case we had a very dry summer......yeah right ! Probably best for growing in pots as they'll not grizzle too much if you don't water them every day.

Had a very good year with Scarlet Emperor in grow bags I think it was 2010, but I haven't grown runners since I switched to Frenchies.

I'd check one and make sure they aren't rotting in the compost which usually happens if they are too wet.

How many plants is that per MFB? And presumably do you end up tying the canes together in a wigwam or line as normal?

                        Paul,

I only grow one per bucket, or three per very large pot. I know people do more but I find watering to be a problem if you cramp them to much.

I'm in this boat too. French Beans are a brave new world. My daughter loves them to bits so it looks like my runners will be given away or stashed for another year
