  • Runner beans ... can I ?? Also buying veg plants online

    Hi everyone

First post here .... although I have been reading all the wonderfully useful tips here for sometime !

I have also posted this on another forum so am pasting most of the content of that message here, wanted to mention that for any people who may be members of both forums ... anyway , here goes :

    Hi all

This is my first year growing anything in the garden and I had a good start at it , we have been eating some lovely potatoes, lettuce, beetroot, spring onions, carrots and more .... However I sadly didnt get , for various reasons , quite a few of the seeds sown for other plants that I wanted to grow this year... I was looking through my seeds earlier and I have some Enorma runner beans seeds and it says I can still sow them in July , is that really right , could I still possibly get some sort of crop ???? I am on the South coast in Dorset if that makes any difference! ( Have a sunny (when the sun does shine... ! , sheltered back garden and greenhouse too , again if that makes a difference too ! ).

Further to the above I have been thinking about buying some plants online , I have been looking at Rocket Gardens (who now dont have in stock what I was thinking of ordering ...) and Vegetable Plants Direct and they are still selling plants that I would have thought should be well established and producing now , like cucumbers , peas , mange tout , and courgettes ... is it still feasible to buy these types of young plants and get a crop. I will of course next year hopefully not have any distractions and get these all underway from seed myself but wouldnt mind getting a few plants if it could be worth it and partly or the family to be involved in looking after and seeing the end results

Have any of you had any dealings with the above two companies and have any comments about the quality of their plants ?

Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance for your help. Will be going through my seeds again later to see what I can still sow for winter crops too.

I should think, being where you are in the country, that you will still get crops from most of those plants, although maybe a shortened season. The runner beans saying sow in July - you have to bear in mind that it's actually just about August... But, if you have the seeds sitting there, and the space, what have you got to lose?

    Welcome to the Vine btw

        Hi Sarah and Phil

Many thanks for your welcome Sarah and for both of your replies. Yep as you say it is nearly August but I do have the space so have sown some of the bean seeds, fingers crossed for some sort of late crop. I also placed an order for some plants online today too. I have been creating a monthly planner for next year with all lists of what needs sowing and when , lets hope I dont have any family/illness problems like this year !

Good luck with the late bean plants at your allotment Phil. Should I just leave my beans in the greenhouse where they are at the moment?
