hiya all this is my 1st year at growing your own,my greenhouse is full of seedlings which have been slow but seem to be making an appearance now.my main thing is that my beans ive planted which are runner beans and ying yang beans have failed and left me with a foul smell and rotten beans,3 runner beans have sprouted tho.they were put in an unheated propagator in the greenhouse.i have planted more this time with the propagator lid off in case its to damp for them lets hope success this time.has any 1 else experienced this,many thanks

it's too cold for runners and french beans, they'll rot in the cold wet compost as you've found out. Sow some at the beginning of May instead, or bring the nes you've just sown inside the house.Comment

what are ying yang beans?
Too early!
I sometimes wonder if I'm mad for not even having started my tomatoes yet but I know it's not even May yet though and even if they get started 'a bit late' they all catch up.
Runner beans will be started about end of first week in May here in Oldham.
I've prepared a rich trench for them so I'm hoping when they do go out they'll do well.
I think I'm going to do all my french beans in pots this year though.Comment

I've only 12 or so frenchies at the moment, they're being hardening off in a cold greenhouse - germinated indoors, in a south facing room a couple of weeks ago. They're a trial bean (as in, I've only a few of them) so have started them off early so I can save the seeds. They're in pots now, and will live out their little lives in pots - it means if I need to move them later on when the pods are drying I can do so.Last edited by chris; 20-04-2012, 07:05 AM.Comment

My Frenchies and runners are in the cold gh, just coming through the compost (my last frost is next week).
As they've said ^, they were much too wet. I chit my bean seed, and the white ones in particular are prone to rotting instead of sprouting if they're anything other than "just damp"All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.Comment

I've got a new toy -- cold frame. So I've sowed mine last week (4 weeks or so earlier than usual) inside, they'll be out to the GH as soon as they've germinated and into the cold frame once they've got something resembling a proper leaf.
At least, that's the plan.Garden Grower

Brought my French beans and mange tout back in from the greenhouse, and luckily they have started germinating, Question is once there up will they be ok going back in the cold greenhouse? I'm hoping to put them back in at the end of this week hopefully, there in the dining room at the moment, its not ideal

Urban, according to the forecast the night time temps are set to lift a little by the weekend.
I would think you would not have a problem but have a fleece handy just incase we get a low one.

hiya thanks for the info,ive bought them in and left them on a windowsill in a spare room.the 3 that sprouted are doing well and the new ones sown have swollen by the looks of it as i can see bumps where they are,lets hope they sprout.all other seeds in greenhouse are germinating pretty quick now.we live on an exposed hill top so may be a lil behind here,the greenhouse gets a constant pounding too slightly dropping internal temp lol .
