  • Root veg to sow now?

Does anyone have suggestions of root veg that can be started now?

Carrots that I had growing over winter have bolted, and pulling them up they also have very pathetic roots. Quite disappointed, but guess this really wasn't the winter/spring for them?

So I now have a deep planter that needs filling...I already have a second batch of spring-sown carrots on the go, removed acouple to thin them out some more and they're looking really good so all is not lost on the carrot front.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

This is a good site if you want to know what seeds can still be sown, month by month. With root veg you're a bit limited as they take a long time growing from seed to maturity, but turnips are quick; beetroot of course; radish (you don't have to eat it raw, it cooks well); not strictly a root but kohl rabi matures quickly. Early maturing carrots can still be sown - check on variety as some take longer than others.

      Endless wonder.

I've just sown parsnips, carrots, turnips, beetroot and radish. I'm not following any rules this year - just sowing what I can when I can and hoping for the best You could also think about Fennel (Hello Flo ).......and Winter radish in July and Mooli........

When did you sow your carrots?

Our planting is going to be very much the same, this year.

              They will do, they're biennial.

Some types like Autumn King* will stand in the ground over winter, but they need to be used up asap. Once they start reshooting leaves in the spring, they're already preparing to go to seed (being biennial).

              * btw, that means they tolerate autumn, it doesn't mean you can plant them in autumn. All carrots need to be sown April-July

These were "nantes frubund" - 'suitable for sowings during autumn, unique spring-harvest carrot' according to the packet. No doubt should have had them up before bolting, but been holding off harvesting as they've not been big enough. No doubt due to weather.

Will try sowing some parsnips in their place, thanks for all the suggestions

Yeah, I've just had a look: Carrot Nantes Frubund Fast Crop Seeds | Notcutts | Notcutts

They might do better in a greenhouse, I'm still not convinced they'll grow over autumn & winter. I've had some carrots in a tub in the gh since last July, and they haven't grown at all. They produced lots of foliage, but the roots are no bigger than your little finger. There just isn't enough light for them in the winter months

You could try some of the smaller carrots? Early Nantes or Early Scarlet Horn perhaps?
