  • Rocket!

I've never grown rocket before but I'm interested in doing so (I like the taste). Is there any particular problems associated with it? What would be a good/reliable variety? I'm thinking about growning it in troughs or big pots, is this a good idea? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Definitely worth growing & sowing a second lot too,a bit later on. Some of mine went to seed after so long. I had some problems with flea beetle, they leave tiny holes in the leaves. Those sticky yellow traps waved over the area is a good way to get rid of the beetles if you see any. I use copper tape as slug protection too,I assume they'd eat it,if they could

Only problem I have with it is that it bolts pretty quickly. Tend to grow the perennial stuff these days.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I grow some in the GH border and leave it to self seed. No idea what variety it is as its been there for several years.

I grow it outdoors. Today I noticed that last years has self-seeded and is a couple of inches tall. I can't remember the variety though.

I stop growing it as a solo and now grow Mesclun a French salad leaf mix which contains some spicy leaves. Get about 4 cuts per sowing.

We grow wild and non-wild rocket but don't know the varieties. It self-seeds, is outside and we pick from it all winter.

I have quite a few packets of unopened rocket and I wouldn't mind sending you one or two packs if you'd like? There are a few different varieties so if there is something you prefer let me know and I'll have a look. I know it isn't expensive to buy but it bothers me to have 8 packets of rocket seeds that will take me about 30 years to use

That would be excedingly good of you friend, if it doesn't put you out too much or cost excessively. How does one go about this? As to variety, I haven't a clue, I would leave that up to your greater knowledge in these matters!

A while back a very kind grape sent me some mooli seeds so I see this as paying it forward. The simplest and cheapest option is for me to send them to you direct in the post, if you PM me your address today I will get them in the post tomorrow.

I found rocket bolted quite quickly so this year I have tried mizuna instead - it has the same peppery taste and it is growing fabulously in a couple of troughs. Worth a try?
