Now, I thought rocket was quick to grow and pretty foolproof, but I planted some over a week ago and there's still no sign of life. Am I being impatient or could the slugs and snails devoured it overnight?? I've got SlugX traps nearby but maybe I should have put down some shocka mat.

The cold nights may delay germination a bit at this time of year; allow a bit longer. -

Rocket is usually very quick and easy - up in a few days - but it's cold out there.
You could plant some in a seed tray and just put it on the windowsill. You'll get a small crop very quickly you can use from the tray, or plant the whole tray out in a block.

Mine usually sprouts within about 3 days if under any sort of protection, the stuff I sowed direct in the garden a couple of weeks ago took a bit longer and is growing more slowly. Plus, I am much further south than you!Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.
