  • Ripening green tomatoes - an idea!!

I've put some green tomatoes into polystyrene modules to ripen. Some of my plants had botrytis and affected tomatoes seem to rot at the stalk end- so by placing them upright in the modules, I can see signs of rot immediately and each tomato is separated from its neighbour. They're in the other greenhouse (that doesn't have botrytis) now enjoying some sunshine. I'll bring them back into the house before dusk.
    Just an idea

Sounds a good idea to me.
I leave mine on the plants in the g.h. with rotting banana skins at the base of plants.
Onion also help them ripen if you dry them off and hang the strings in the g.house.

I'm in no hurry for them to ripen - a couple a day will do me fine!! Its the Botrytis that's the real issue as I don't want them to contaminate each other. There are twice as many toms as you see in the photos and still some on a few plants that look OK.
Please, everybody, don't suggest making chutney with them. I have jars of the stuff from earlier years

I for one won't suggest making green tom chutney I've got jars of it left from 4 year back.

So the $10000 question - should I take the green ones off now or leave them on. Some are changing slightly and I am picking them as they start turning and are fine. Others seem to be turning leathery.

Advice please from all you experts

                    Best regards

Looking back at my photo on 14th October, I'm amazed at how many tomatoes have ripened since then. I leave them in the greenhouse until they are red, then bring them into the house for a final flourish. Only lost a few to mould and none have cross contaminated another. I'll do it again!!
