  • reuse of potato compost

I am just about to start harvesting my Charlotte potatoes.
I would like to know what the used growing medium can be used for.
Can I use it to grow more potatoes
The original compost was half peat free and plenty of well rotted manure
You grow it; I'l tell you how to cook it

It isn't usually recommended to re-use potato compost for potatoes again because of introducing viruses etc and, of course, the same nutrients will be used for the following on crop, which would be looking for food already taken. Professional potato growers have to re-use their fields but then, they spray and feed the ground. Having said that, I grow a lot of my spuds in containers and this year I intend to use one for my christmas spuds. I will, however, replace half the compost with home grown to bump it up. Usually, I re-use the compost for salads stuff or carrots are good since they don't need anything too rich. Hope that helps.

Agree with Sanjo, using the potato bags and compost for carrots etc.

I grew carrots in my potato bags last year when I'd harvested the pots, but I'm afraid they succumbed to slugs. This year like above, I am trying some spuds in them for Christmas (well, later on in the year anyway) so I've mixed in some pelleted chicken manure and we'll see what happens. Failing that, you can always use it as mulch or on your other veg beds.

Turned out our Charlotte potatoes from their large pot last week and put the old compost on to an empty raised bed. My partner yesterday bought some seed potatoes to be planted for Christmas and we plan to use some of the old compost, mixed with some new compost, chicken manure pellets for these new potatoes.
