    Replanting tatties for a 2nd crop

    Just pulled up some Charlotte tatties from a potato bag and a couple near the surface are a bit green. So I'm going to keep these as seed potatoes and replant them in a few weeks in the hope of a second crop later this year.
    Much cheaper than buying seed potatoes for Chr***mad

    I'm never sure - is it OK to use very green potatoes as seed? Apart from that, I think you've got a good idea there.

    I'm thinking of setting spuds for December* earlier - I usually start them in September and over several years have never got any results.

    Has anyone tried starting them in July or August - and if so, how did they produce?>>

      I have a thread on Xmas potatoes going at the minute

      As for green potatoes used as seed I'm sure I read there's a chemical in the green bit and as well as being poisonous they don't seem to produce tubers I will try and find out the web page now!

        I've been told that planting green potatoes is a good idea as slugs won't eat them. How true this is I don't know but I've always done it
        I'm going to harden these off for a few weeks and plant them in a bucket so that I can bring it under cover when the weather gets colder. Hopefully, there'll be more tatties to dig up soon and I'll just keep some back each time for replanting.

          I'm trying an experiment this year:
          For every plant that I lift this year, I plan to leave 1 tattie in situ cos no matter how hard I try to lift them all, there are always rogue tatties appearing over the previous years bed so I will feel better if I plan the rogues.

            It's ok I'm talking crap the website says it will produce tubers that are edible and that its a good idea as green potatoes deter pests eating it the bit I read was that a green potato did not chit (supermarket brand) so did not produce tubers it then went on to say said potato could have been sprayed with chemical

              Not sure if this is correct but, don't you need to confuse the potato into assuming you've had a winter. Popping them into the freezer or fridge might do this?

              I have some seed pots ready to go in as soon as I'm ready to plant them. I was going to give it another 4 weeks before starting some off.

                I know what you mean BM. Last year's spud patch was hit by blight and I've left that bit of ground lie fallow. There are lots of really healthy looking spud plants springing up there that look better than the ones I've planted elsewhere

                  Won't that mean you have more rogues BM?, or is this the intention!

                    Yes they will be intentional rogues Mikey. I don't hold out much hope as I have never known rogue tatties to come up the same year so thinking about it may not be such a good idea................I could plant them elsewhere on the plot though...........
