  • recovering from wilt?

absolutely everything in my garden is wilting in the heat, all the leaves feel thin and are flopping about.. will they recover?

Very likely most of them will, after it cools down later. The odd thing might object and go to seed though. Will you be able to give them a good soak later?

my tomatillos looked like I hadn't watered them for a week last night when infact it was 12hrs at the most. Once I watered them they looked fab in 20mins. I am now watering everything morning and night instead of some in the morning and some in the evening... probably will overwater now and they will droop again

I was thinking I may need to feed things a bit more often too, what does everyone else think will the plants need more feeding as well as watering with the hot weather?

yeah i'll make sure i do.. they just look so sad.. are yours like that too or is it something i'm not doing right?

it's the papery thin feel of the leaves that concern me most

I've had my tomatoes almost bent double before now they were so wilty, but they came to later on. If you're really worried, give them a water right now, but be really, really careful not to get any on the leaves. They'll still need doing later as well though.

Murphy, you have to be careful about feeding in very hot weather - if the water all evaporates it can leave concentrated feed behind in the soil which can damage the plant's roots. So maybe a very dilute feed would be the best?

god, looking after veg plants is worse than having kids!!

i've already got scorch round the edges of the leaves (not got a clue how cos i only ever water them late evening.. will the scorch be ok or will it damage the plant in some way?

I was using tomorite and was replacing 1 watering with a diluted half watering can every 4-6 days.I think thats what the product instructions said! But was only watering once a day.

My initial theory was to feed a different section of the garden each day or two as the plants started to fruit... as the watering can takes much longer than the hose pipe. Then water the rest. Not being lazy just time efficient

Now I am thinking I need to water twice a day because of the heat(?), I was then thinking I should increase the feeding as everything seems to be shooting up and I will be watering more which I believe washes away the feed anyway?

I was originally only watering on an evening but am now having to go out first thing too... so glad the neighbours can't see me watering my plants in my PJ's!

I could change the feed routine to a full can of water but with the same level of tomorite as a half can(same feed more water)... or even water them after I have fed them to give them more liquid.. probably the easier option

but should I do it more often because of the weather? I always feed them at night so there is lees evaporation.

I am babbling Sorry.... I Have I just made a simple task into the theory of relativity!

              Cheers

I was thinking the same myself....although I believe they are more messy and noisey and you can't leave them outside at night! I also believe that when you get fed up with them you can just throw them in the bin and put it down to experience and never go there again

Guess who doesn't have children and may never have tomatoes again

Maybe it is like childbirth (so I have been told!) , you say never again when you are going through the experience but come next year all the bad things are forgotten and you are planting the seeds again

                  Cheers Helen
