  • Recommend me a Pea

Went to the seed boxes to sort out stuff to start off over the next couple of days, and to my surprise I found that I have NO Kelveldon Wonder peas for the first time ever - I overlooked saving them (or saved and mislaid them last year)!

I'm going to have to buy some at the hardware store tomorrow, so what I'm looking for is a round pea that grows 3 - 4 ft tall, crops well and tastes sweet while still quite mature?

    any suggestions welcomed with thanks

I already accept that I'll prolly end up getting Kelveldon Wonder just thought I'd be adventurous in theory :-)
Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

I always start the season of with Feltham First as I find them reliable and will withstand the cold start. I already have the first row planted out on the lottie and they are doing fine. Will be starting some more of in the greenhouse this weekend.

Another one to try would be Early Onward. But I know what you mean by Kelvedon Wonder! If you pm me your address I can sort you out with a handful of each! Since it's you!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thank you to everyone for the suggestions, esp to Jeanied and ginger ninger with their very kind offers, but I need to have these in my hands on Tuesday(moon planting guide) ready to start and the post can take up to a week to get to me from the UK. Any other suggestions are more than welcome as I won't buy until Tomorrow or Tuesday unless I can't control myself

I'll actually look in the local Lidl (do get some food and bits from there - did try some of their nasturtiums a couple of years ago but the germination was poor 30% ish I think!) Other than that there's the Farm shop and the hardware/garden center, I'll bear in mind any suggestions I get here, read the packets and makes my choice from there.

I'll let you know how I get on and what I decide on . prolly still Kelveldon Wonder though :-)

I had a look around and decided on Kelveldon Wonder from Lidl at 99c. The pea packets from Suttons in the hardware shop were around €4.00 - no surprise I buy most of my seeds in the UK is it?

I'll see what the germination rate is for the record and report back as I had poor results last time with Lidl seed - I'm also germinating my own fresh from last year, Norli pea seed at the same time, so I should get a comparison.

My local GC sells peas £1.75 for half a pint. Depending on variety there is about 600/700 peas in half a pint. They get there seeds from Moles so it may be worth checking out their website for future supplies.

That's certainly the way to go if you can share them out - probably too many for me to use over 3 years and even then I generally save enough one year to last a couple of years - things just didn't go to plan somewhere along the line and I've run out!
