    Radishes

    Hi,

    I planted some 'zlata' radishes which state from sow to crop in 5 weeks. Its just over that and the leaves are big so I pulled 2 up, and they are just leaves with roots... no evidence of any radish. Why?? I was told Radishes were easy and I was looking forward to my first harvest of something!

    Perhaps 5 weeks means in mid summer.
    Give them a while longer ...

      Ninjajane, a seedpacket will quote the optimum performance under their trial conditions. Temperatures for all of us have been diabolical this year and so everything is therefore slow. Don't give up on them (although if you have good leaf growth it indicates that they are progressing)
      Did you feed them and if so what with?
      Even if there is no radish root as such it is still possible to eat the green bit, providing it isn't tough of course.
      Did you grow them in the ground or in the greenhouse

        You can usually tell when radishes are ready cause the shoulder will just stick out of the soil. If not just push back a bit of the soil carefully with your finger. If you can't see owt or just a tiny red bulb then it's not ready yet

          Ah I see. I'm being impatient and I was wondering how you tell when they are ready :/

          am i supposed to feed them then?

          I grew them in the ground, as a bit of an experiment as I normally do pots in a plastic greenhouse. Saying that my non patient self has been rewarded as I noticed my first tom and pepper flowers today and a tiny cucumber on my pot plants and 2 broad bean seedlings in the ground - which is also an experiment.

          all we need now is a decent spring and a decent summer....

            I grew some mooli a long while ago , they are the very long white ones.
            I had a recipe from an indian cook book for a curry side dish.
            It involved grating mooli,carrots and adding some whole black peppers I think.
            You fried the seeds and added grated mooli and carrots, heated and served warm.
            It was very nice !
            Might still have it.

              No, I wasn't suggesting you feed them, I was wondering whether you had because you had a lot of top growth.
              Unless your soil is very poor they should be OK
