  • Quick crops to grow in June

    Hi everyone!

For our Allotment Inspiration pages in our June issue, we would like to create a small feature about growing quick crops while waiting to harvest from other plants in June.

It would be great if forum members could share their tips on quick crops and share which varieties you prefer.

I look forward to reading your replies!

June is the time to sow both those quick growing frost sensitive plants one will eat before the first frost and that bloom when days are lengthening and that therefore can't be (or are more difficult to get right when) sown before: chinese cabbage, florence fennel, cauliflower, spinach, rocket,
And also hungry gap vegetables: swedes and winter radishes, biennial greens like land cress, winter purslane, mustard greens.

I sow marrowfat peas thickly in a big pot and cut the shoots about 4 weeks later. Can even get a couple of more cuttings from it I allow it to re-grow.

Cress. I love it and it grows like wildfire.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Lettuces (I found the deer's tongue variety Relic was excellent for summer sowing last year), oriental greens (mizuna, namenia, mibuna, pak choi etc), florence fennel, peas (Geisha is a late variety that I have grown successfully from a June sowing). Not had much success with summer sown spinach or turnips, which are often recommended as catch crops.

Lots of oriental veggies and very quick. Like pak choi (harvest as baby, just the leaves or leave to mature) chop sue greens, mustards, radish etc and all can be thrown into salads or stir frys etc
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them
