  • Question re Brittle Wax Dwarf French Beans & Di Nizza Marrow

I went a bit mad in Lidl today and bought some seeds for unusual looking veg (to my eyes anyway although I know they are probably quite common).

Has anyone grown either the Brittle Wax beans or the Di Nizza Marrow?

I have never tried marrow and I think these are small ones from look of the picture.

Also, do yellow french beans taste the same as green ones? I just thought it would make a nice change to have a bit more colour on our dinner plates!

I think the marrow seeds were 29p and the beans 47p.

I have just re read the pack and it is multilingual, the english name is Marrow, Di Nizza but underneath it says Courgette, Di Nizza.

Do I take it these are courgettes, which I know are small marrows really.

Dunno but I have got all sorts of weird and wonderful beans to grow (weird and wonderful to me anyway). I sowed some yellow dwarf beans last night and some red beans that I can't actually remember whether they are dwarf or not now I come to think of it... oh, and some green dwarf ones

I think they are marrows. Courgettes isn't French for marrows though, so I don't know why it would say courgettes as well?

Also, I checked the other bean and my suspicion that on reflection it maybe wasn't a dwarf was correct - oops. It is Borlotti Lingua di Fuoco which is a climbing bean. Ah well, I can always resow if it doesn't make it

On the subject of beans - can anyone recommend a suitable shelly bean for two / three sisters i.e. climbing bean that doesn't mind being stopped at about 5 feet?

          Hi 21again

I also have those Lidl seeds as mentioned, sowed some of the Di Nizza variety and they are romping away, still indoors at the moment

Well the Di Nizza have gone under the sink tonight on some wet kitchen roll so I shall keep my eyes on them. It does say they take 6 to 10 days to germinate but I have found that most things I have put under there have germinated in at least half the time that it says on the backs of the packets.

I won't make the mistake (as I am a newbie to all of this) of starting my beans now as I have done with my runners and other dwarf beans (Tendergreen) which I started about a fortnight ago.

I have always had very good results with Lidl seeds. The Zucchini di Nizza are excellent courgettes. You can eat them at golf ball size or leave them until they reach the size of tennis balls and they are very good sliced and grilled (or griddled).

                They sound lovely.

Do you brush them with olive oil before your grill them?

Yes - brush them with olive oil and sprinkle them with chopped mint when they're cooked - recipe from an Italian friend. Obviously it works well for any type of courgette, but the round ones look particularly good.

Thanks for the tip about the mint.

I hope they grow ok now.

I sowed some about 2/3 weeks ago? can't remember when exactly, potted on - some in unheated greenhouse, some on windowsill, the ones inside are in 3" pots and are starting to flower, they are really healthy plants

That sounds exciting, how long before those flowers turn into little courgettes/mini marrows?

French for marrow is courge (the universal word for squash), a courgette is a small marrow.

I also have the brittle wax beans from lidl, I've never grown them before either.....................
                          Tx
