    A question about squash......

    I've got one section of our garden fence that is chainlink fencing (the rest is normal wooden fencing). So I thought it would be a good use of this fence to grow something up it! I rather fancy growing some squash but wasn't sure if any of them climb. If I chose a variety that produces a smaller type of squash and is also a trailing variety do you think I could grow it up the fence?

      Lots of winter & summer squash climb along - not sure whether all are self-supporting using tendrils and which might need a bit of tieing in.

      We grew onion squash (potimarron/ichiki kuri), tromba d'albenga and a small blue hubbard up metal obelisks last year.

      Edit - maybe try an outdoor cuke?

        On our allotments, one plot holder grows serpente di sicilia up the chain link fence - spectacular long summer squash - use them like courgette when they are young.
        Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

          Sorry, been out all day

          I accidentally grew Bonbon (a BIG squash) up my debris netting last year ... it took itself for a walk up and over my brassica nets

          Hooligan is a lovely little squash, softball size. It doesn't half ramble, so I think ideal to grow up a net or fence

            Thank you all for your replies. I plumped for Hooligan in the end as the name reminded me of my 4yr old and 2yr old today :-) So hopefully i'll have them plus a load of other seeds by next weekend. I'll let you know how i get on with them :-)

              Sorry I'm late to this one. I grew Little Gem over an arch last year and the year before I grew onion squash. Little gem produces lots of green cricket ball size round squash ideal for one person. But Hooligan is also a lovely squash to grow over an arch or up fencing, mine took advantage of the washing line as well .

                these were crown prince I think.
                I also grew chioggia di marina, a large pumpkin, over an arch, they didn't fall off, I was surprised.
