question about rhubarb

    question about rhubarb

    Hi,

    Is there a "season" as such for rhubarb? or can you eat it while its there? my grandad always said it was at its best while dandylions were out but our rhubarb is still growing strong now. its my first crop so i have no idea how long we can still be cutting it & eating it for.

    My dad also reckoned you could eat it while it was there. He's the only person I ever knew that could kill rhubarb! If you crop it all the time it will exhaust the plant. We always used to reckon until mid August but it depends a bit on the variety and where you live. Eat it later in the season if you fancy some but don't overdo it and leave some stalks and leaves to die down at the end of the season.

      no idea what variety it is as it was from my grandads allotment & hes passed away since we were given the crown. think ill tell the OH mid august... as im already getting sick of it! hehehehe

          This is my first season growing rhubarb, I grew it from seed and I know you aren't supposed to take any stems the first year of growth but I couldn't resist. It was lovely and still has plenty of stems on ready to die back later so I hope it will be ok.
          Next year I will be eating rhubarb lots. I haven't had any like it since childhood when my nan had some in her garden, which tasted lovely. The stuff I have bought from the shops since then has not been anywhere near as nice and so I stopped buying it.

            I love rhubarb but have never managed to really get it going,but never give up there is always time to have another try,perhaps better luck next time

                we know youre not supposed to cut it during its first year but we couldnt help it... there was just SO much of it!

                  I have managed to kill a couple of older crowns this year somehow, but I did plant some new crown last autumn which are doing well and we have had some from them this year.
