  • Which purple sprouting broccoli?

I did I stupid thing and didn't keep the seed packet to some PSB I grew last year and I can't remember what it was. It was very prolific and I seemed to be harvesting it from end of September/early October to the last dregs at the beginning of January. I've looked through various books and seed catalogues in an attempt to recall what I grew but I can't see anything that is harvested over this period. Anyone have any ideas of which variety this could be?

The earliest I know of is Rudolph, my book says early to late spring, which is not really the same as yours. I have some this year, it isn't sprouting yet but then I planted the plants quite late. Sorry don't think I'm much help!

Maybe Summer Purple that is sown in Jan/early April for a harvest starting in July/Aug.

It the one I use for my early PSB

Can you remember when you sowed it? Most traditional PSBs are harvested in spring but I believe that (given the correct conditions) you can get it to sprout earlier or later than this. Just a thought, I've only ever wanted it Easter-ish time so have always aimed for that - although it was particularly late the other year after a very cold winter and does seem a bit slow this year too.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

As Potty says - Summer Purple Sprouting broccoli - sow March/early April in a seedbed or earlier indoors and plant out April/May. Harvest June-September.

I have had Summer Purple run on into late January however this year it was finnished by late November. Thats not a problem as I am now cutting a standard variety.
