  • Purple Podded Peas

    Hi,

I have grown some peas from a seed swap labelled purple peas. They have grown loads of peas all a few inches long but flat like a mangetout. I thought they were podders not eaters, but I have eaten a few as mangetout and they were lovely.

As this is my first year growing peas of any sort, I'm not sure how long should I wait for them to fill out or should I just keep eating them as they are?

    Thanks very much,

    Jo

All peas start off that shape and size Jojo. If you want to eat them as peas you need to leave them to fill out. Also if you want to save seed you need to leave a couple (at least) of pods on the plants until the pods go brown and crispy.

I shall sit on my hands and watch them grow before picking any more.

I don't think there are any purple podded peas that are good to eat fresh. It really depends on the variety you have. Purple podded peas, isn't really enough.
I suspect they are the Dutch type pea, which is better used as a mangetout, or dried for winter use.
But I suspect you will find out.

If you have a decent tasting tall purple podding pea, I suspect many on here will want to swap seeds

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I grew peas last year bit mainly ate the shoots as I didn't grow snuff to get a big harvest from them but the shoots are fab in salads or in buttered new potatos ..

I grow Lancashire Lad purple podded peas and they're definitely better eaten as a mange tout than a podding pea.
