My pumpkin is now the size of a small football, but its green.

This might be a silly question but do they start out green and then turn orange?

Yes Treepixie, as they ripen their colour changes just like tomatoes etc.

Of course it will depend too on the variety of pumpkin or squash.

Remove some leaves early October to allow the sun to help em ripen

I wish mine was the size of a small football. It is more like a slightly rotund tennis ball at the moment.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.
