    Pumpkin seeds

    I know that all pumpkin seeds are edible, but is there a variety of pumpkin that will grow in the UK that produces the lovely green seeds that you can buy to eat in the shops?

    If I planted some of them, would they grow, and would I get the same lovely green seeds?

    Lady Godiva has 'naked' green seeds, I've seen the seeds on ebay, you can probably find them elsewhere as well

      I think pumpkin seeds sold for consumption have been "roasted" in their shells,so will not germinate.

        Aren't the green bits the insides of the husks? Have bought them in Greece and spent ages chewing the woody husks before realising that it was crack and spit job!

          I think the green pumpkin seeds sold for eating are raw. If they have a hard husk - which is how most of my pumpkin seeds saved for growing are - then they need boiling and then roasting to make them edible.

          I will be trying Lady Godiva which are supposed to grow without that husk - as I love eating the pumpkin seeds that you buy in packets! But I may just try and germinate some as well as eat them!

                  I've got some saved seeds of Lady Godiva if you want some (pm me)?
                  They don't produce loads per pumpkin but can be eaten straight away (I got the youth club children to hollow mine out last autumn - they got a free pumpkin and I got a bucket of mush (crazy pumpkin lady) but they did about 20 in 1 1/2 hours so saved me some time!)

                    They're green inside the husks as has been said above. I roasted crown price, tossed in honey (though may have been golden syrup, can't remember) towards the end - they were amaizng

                      What is the rest of Lady Godiva like? Is the skin edible (I consider red kuri skin edible)? And what's the flesh like? How big are they?

                          Not one of the better pumpkins to eat, the flesh isn't very dense and turns a bit mushy when roasted, but fine for soup. If you eat red kuri you'd eat this skin too - I don't!
                          Fairly big pumpkins, easily as big as a football and very productive plants - 5-7 big pumpkins per plant. But very sprawling plants too, definately the 'largest' vines of all those I grew last year and I trained them strictly in a spiral, they took over!

                            Thanks for the kind offer of seeds, Vicky, but now I've had a good search on the web, and together with what you've posted here, I'm assured that Lady Godiva would be way too big for my small garden. I can really only grow bushy types of squash if I want to have any space for other stuff.
