Default Pumpkin help

Hi, i am after a bit of advice about pumpkins. I have grown 2 plants which seem to be thriving each having about 10-12 tennis ball sized pumpkins on them. i have been led to believe that if i just keep 2 on each they will grow to be a bigger size. could anyone tell me if this true as i am only really growing them for the children at halloween.
Also do i put something under each fruit to keep it out of contact with the ground.
many thanks
John

The fewer fruits you keep on, John, the bigger you are likely to be able to get them. You'll need to feed the plant, they are hungry blighters - and water, but I hardly need to tell you in this weather! I usually put a tile under the fruits. We have a few left over from some roofing work we had done when we came here.
