Do you think it would be feasible to grow a pumpkin in the top of a dalek compost bin? I'm just worried that the stem and foliage trailing down might pull it out of the top?

What about laying a pallet or 2 up against the dalek at an angle to help support the plant?Never test the depth of the water with both feet

You could lift the Dalek off then plant like half way up the heap, or knock the top off to make two piles.Location....East Midlands.Comment

I'm growing my marrow in the top of my dalek Flo, I'm not using the compost for anything yet so I might as well get some use out of the space. I've also got 6lb+ of broken egg shells to put in the top to try and deter snails/slugs. I'll dig the shells in after the marrows done.Last edited by ginger ninger; 30-04-2010, 03:59 PM.Comment

I am really short of space and for some reason have sown loads of squash seeds which have germinated. Soooooooooooo I am going to take the access panel off the front of my dalek, put in some decent MP compost ON TOP of a thick layer of part rotted home made, plant my (poss 2 per dalek) Butternuts at the entrance, and I am hoping that they will have enough feed there to sustain them during their growing period. As I have limited room for them to sprawl, I am also going to try and train them along the path and up into the apple tree. OH might protest about that when it somes to harvesting the apples but the packet says harvest August onwards so, with a bit of luck, the B/N may be finished by the time harvest arrives.Last edited by Sanjo; 30-04-2010, 07:46 PM.Comment

Pumpkins, squashes ans courgettes all do well when planted on top of compost heaps. I intend putting 4 courgettes on my 6' by 6' compost bin which has been filled with manure and topped with 4/5 inches of home made compost.
