  • PSB - some in flower, some not

I have a patch of psb in their first season. About 6 of them have very few leaves but huge flower stalks, yet the majority of the plants are low, leafy and have no flower stalks. Why is this?

I'm not harvesting anything until the spring in any case.

      Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

Mine has been sprouting for the last few weeks. I opted to cut off the spears and use them as I can't imagine them making it through to next year at this rate.

The ones that have flower stalks have "bolted" so you may as well pull them up. The ones that are leafy should be fine - they will carry on growing slowly through the season.

Planted some seedlings out yesterday. Three inches high at most.

Mine went out yesterday too. Early plantings do have a tendency to bolt

But isn't it the flowrs you're supposed to eat? I'm a bit confused.

If I leave the bolted ones will they be any good ext year?

you eat the sprigs, before they turn into flowers. Once they've flowered, that's it: the plant goes to seed. It isn't worth saving the seed either, it won't come true

You eat the tight green buds before they turn into yellow flowers. PSB isn't perennial - you could try cutting off the flower stalks and seeing if the plants develop any more.
