Default Compost - the beginnings

TheBaileyLife has just taken delivery of their NEW 330 litre Compost bin, complete with base and it only cost £11 (RRP £50) We got it through our local council so well worth a look before you buy.

We have been collecting household composting material (peelings, flowers, etc) and are now ready to move it into the big bin.

Any useful tips to starting the compost off?

Thanks

You've probably got one the big plastic 'Dalek' type bins like mine. You should put a layer of twiggy material in the bottom to provide some ventilation & then add your saved peelings etc.Try & add alternate layers of soft & hard type materials & not too many grass cuttings all at once if you are using them.A sprinkling of compost accelerator if you have it helps or if not a spadeful of soil/compost every so often or a handful of chicken manure pellets helps.

If you go to the thread 'composting' in the allotment advice section No 19 in that thread it will give you a very good idea of composting!

Add some allready active compost to get it started and at regular intervals add some soil or compost.
