  • Protecting broad beans

    Hi,

I planted another lot of broad beans the weekend, most of them bar 10 we've put under used water bottles, cut off the bottoms and taken the tops off them. Most of them are not properly established and quite small at the moment (the previous lot only went in weekend before).

With the change in weather and some possible snow on its way will this be enough protection? I'm trying to get some more bottles quickly before tuesday night hits.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Have you any fleece you could pop over them secured with tent pegs? Just an idea in case you can't get your bottles in time.

Broadies are quite hardy. I've had established plants survive -18 but obviously any fresh new growth will be a bit more tender. Unless you get a hard frost you should be OK but fleece never did any harm.

Just be extra aware of slugs ~ they love hiding under fleece

ah, that would be the slugs doing the harm then.
