  • probably a dense question about chitting

The allotment shop has already got in the seed potatoes for the year and I've got a mix od first early, second early and maincrop potatoes. Should they all be planted at the same time (early March) in which case I should start chitting all of them now???

Also, I've saved a couple of Rudolph potatoes from Asda as i grew them last year and really liked them, they were supposed to be a "crop till Christmas" potato- should they be planted the same time as the other maincrops?? (I know they may not sprout, being from the supermarket, but as the allotment shop didn't stock them I thought I'd give it a go)

    Ta..

You can plant them all at the same time, yes. Maincrops spend longer in the soil, that's all

I tend to plant some up early in the polytunnel and sometimes a few early ones outside as a risk crop (they may get frosted) but the majority go in the ground in about mid April so I'll start chitting them about end of Feb. My early ones will start as soon as they're delivered which hopefully will be quite soon.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've started chitting mine now- all of them- because they'd already started in the mesh bags and I didn't want the chits to get caught up in the mesh.

My are all out in their trays on the window sill and the first earlies already have tiny spruts on them.

I'm only growing first earlies this year and I put mine in the unheated glass shed (under fleece just in case!) to chit last Sunday.
However - I keep looking at the 2nd earlies - there's still lots of time for me to be tempted to buy some

Thanks all. Out with the egg trays in the freezing conservatory it is then.

                  Salome, somewhere cool, not freezing.

I was being a little dramatic there. If the chillis are surviving in the conservatory (even producing new flowers) then hopefully I won't get frozen tubers... hopefully!!!

Oops. I left mine in the greenhouse to get as much light as possible. Are they likely to be ruined?

They want to be about 10c Newton. Not knowing how warm/cold your gh is, it's hard to tell if they'll be ruined.
