  • Price of tomato seeds whew

Wanted some plum cherry Tropical Ruby as I have grown them previously and they did well. A very bright shiny scarlet plum.
Been around a few garden centres but suspect you can only get it on line.
So whilst on holiday in the Lakes I spotted a packet of Rosada from T&M , the description seemed what I wanted.
The pack cost £3.49 quite steep but what the heck I bought them.

Inspecting the pack later, in the pub, I discover it only contained 6 seeds, so that's 58p a seed !
Fortunately I was in the pub so could drown my sorrows.
I will scrutinise the pack more carefully in future.

Might use two seeds this year ...

    Anyone else been stung ?

Tomatoes germinate 100% of the time. Something I need to tell myself every year - and I ignore it every year. The 'an extra one just in case' isn't needed.

I just don't buy mainstream producer's seeds anymore. Most of mine come from Amishland Seeds for tomatoes, or Real Seed Co, or the Heritage Seed Library, and then I save my own seeds for subsequent years, which means they're free.

Or Moreveg with a lower seed count at a lower price

On the plus side, if your tomato plant only cost you 58p plus compost, you'll be quids in when it starts producing - those cherry-plum tomatoes cost a fortune in the supermarket 'fine' ranges

But you will get many many pounds worth of tomatoes from your 58p.

Amishland no longer ship international which is a shame. I bought more toms from them in january and have subsequently misplaced them and when trying to reorder was told this was not possible.

                          Hoping they turn up.

Thanks to all for comments and yes as you say 58p a seed seems steep but almost all germinate and you get loads off plus expensive in shops.

Please expand on VSP , link perhaps ?

                            Regards Jimmy
