It's really up to you to check the condition of plants before you buy them. I suspect they had been in the shop too long and had dried out. Got any pictures? -

TBH I've never had much success with any "dormant" plants sold in plastic bags with a little bit of compost - and that includes rhubarb & asparagus. They dry out so quickly. I'd rather buy strawbs from L!dl and the like that are sold planted in modules.Comment

I have had nearly fifty bare rooted strawberry plants this year, including those for subscribing to the magazine, and at the moment I have only got eight survivors plus a couple for whom it will be touch and go.
Some casualties were my own fault for not planting them out quickly enough when they arrived, some were seen off the the late frosts but the later ones have been treated exactly the correct way and some have still died off.
I think I will have to purchase a few plug plants soon to get a crop this year, and propogate from runners for next season.

All my fruit bushes I bought from shop failed to thrive, I knew I was taking a gamble. I also bought strawberries, and a stand from well known producer put them in special strawberry grow bag and out of 20 plants I now have 4. I have now bought self watering planters from Aldi and strawberries from Homebase and they are thriving.Comment

I bought 25 bare rooted strawbs from blackmoor and I could not be happier all are thriving not one lost I have tried £ shop ones before and I think it's better to spend a little more to get excellent results that said I still bought some seeds spuds from there took me over 30 mins to choose two bags sifting through all until I found some that looked ok!

I bought a raspberry and redcurrant cane from a pound shop and they took quite a while to get going but are now looking pretty good, I did soak them for longer than suggested due to terrible memory. Maybe the strawberries will take a bit longer to perk up?Comment

I have bought bare root in the past and have done OK, still waiting for my canes to come to life though I'm sure there not dead.
Think I saw the strawbs in poundland and they look completely dead to me. Roots, bit of soil and crumbling apart in the bag. Considering for a little bit more you can get an alive plant from the likes of a garden centre I wouldn't waste my money.Comment
