Hopefully next saturday 13.3.10 if the weather is fine the ground is all ready prepared earlies second earlies and maincrop all at one go.

I am no expert but if it's going to be frosty think you are better wrapping the container or putting in unheated GH. Sure the more knowledgable grapes will keep you right.Originally posted by Brengirl View Post

I started some in containers last week and these are in my unheated GH. It freezes in there overnight but I've got them wrapped in old shredded paper. Fingers crossed they'll turn out ok.
I'll delay planting in the lottie until at least the end of March or mid April.Comment

I checked mine this morning, in containers in unheated GH.
Max/Min thermometer says it didn't get below +2 C, but the compost is solid in the Morrisons flower buckets. They are stood on 1" thick polystyrene and the buckets filled with straw.

My first few went into pots in the greenhouse a month ago.
My next batch will go into builders bag at the lottie on or around St Patrick's Day; and I will keep going by prepping a bed and popping them in until they are all in.

Some of mine are also in bags of soil in GH.....Hope it's not too cold for them.

Some in the greenhouse already but I'm waiting for the soil to warm up a bit. Traditionally it's Good Friday which isn't until April 2nd. I might anticipate by a week or so but not much more.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Mine have only just arrived today! I will probably leave it to the end of the month to put them in though - mainly because the bed that is alloted for them isn't ready yet.
The farmer who grows tatties in the field opposite my plot (Pembrokeshire is famed for its new potatoes), was planting his this morning. (And he always grows them in the same field too, which strikes me as odd when we get concerned about crop rotation!).Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.Comment

I'll be putting a couple of rows of Orla in a cold frame towards the end of the week - would have been done last month but for the really cold weather.Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!Comment

put the first earlies in at school today, mostly because we have to have them picked before school breaks up at the end of June.
That said, we are growing them in plastic sacks and I pulled the sacks into the greenhouse to keep them out of the frost and won't put them out for another 2-3 weeks yet.Comment

First lot of earlies will be going into the polytunnel border as soon as it's finished (couple of weeks time hopefully) with the main crops going outside mid April, I think but it may depend on the weather.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

10 Home Guard grown in 5"/6" pots of compost in the cool greenhouse were very carefully transplanted into their 5 black buckets yesterday. They were through the compost and had a good little root system on them. After transplanting I put them in my home made cloche, each then surrounded with large bubble wrap. I topped up with soil too so that hopefully frost won't get to them. Was lucky doing them this way last year so fingers crossed. The rest of Home Guard and Arran Pilot will go in around Easter, weather permitting. If I have time I shall also plant up charlotte, International Kidney and three big organic Marfona spuds which I found in my daughter's cupboard and which had very strong growth on, and which she would have thrown away if I hadn't got there first!!Comment

loads of people have planted theirs in trenches at our allotment last weekend, I did 12 rows and 4 rows the weekend before 16 rows in all plus the ones in the polytunnel there is only 2 of us I think I have got carried away.
