  • Potatoes in pots, again!

Around the start of january i planted what potatoes were going to be thrown out, they had gone green , mini roots on them, i popped them in 50L plastic pots, about 6 inch of BQ compost, then about 4 inch on top

The last few days they have sprouted, loads of roots popping upward out of the soil and along the surface, no green growth yet, just loads of roots

All 5 pots are doing the same, king edward, charlote, rooster, niccola and some just labeled as white potatoes, there in a cold room in the house, no heating and an open window letting the cold in.

I popped some more compost on the top, should i have seen any green growth coming through yet? i asumed when people said earth them up it was as the shoot came up out of the compost?

is it normal to get a load of roots on the surface, did i not put enough compost on them?

You must have planted them upside down What colour are the roots? It may be too cold and too dark for them so the shoots are looking for favourable conditions. If potatoes are chitted in the dark you get long root like shoots from them. I suppose all you can do is keep topping up the soil and hope for the best.
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

I have just dug one up again to have another look, they seem to be going upward from the eyes around the edges in a curve before going downwards again on most ,i presume it must be so dark in the room over the last week that the others think they are in the soil so are growing along the top?, it looked like a giant spiders web of roots before i buried them, but they had gone up nearly 6 inches to the top before going back down at the very tips after going along the top by about 5 inch in diamiter around the potato?
