  • Potatoes growing in my carrot/beetroot bed - Oops!

I recently built a raised bed for my children to grow carrots and beetroot in. As well as these I also have some radish and garlic growing. I filled the bed with compost from my compost bin, however I have recently found some random plants growing amongst the other veg. Tonight when thinning out the radish I came across several potato plants growing, when I dug them up they were growing from a tiny potato. I've pulled it up but there are a few more I'll need to pull up. Will there be any problems caused by these growing amongst the other veg mentioned?

(Yes, I'm only in my second year of growing and still confused by all this!!!)

No,you'll get all-in-one dinner from one bed
Seriously-if there's not too many of them growing in between I wouldn't worry too much.
If there's a few and they'll disturb the root veg just pull them out.
Last 2 years I had potatoes growing between the strawberries-they came from potato peelings I put into the ground

No it wont be a problem, providing the foliage doesnt grow too high and shade the other crops growing. If you just have one or two, I would leave them and let the kids pick and dig the whole lot.

Oh I am so glad its not just me!!! I found some rouges a few weeks ago and they are now growing in tubs, but today I found at least ten more. Whoops! Some are definately in the wrong spot so I carefully pulled them up. Others I'll leave as they're not a problem.
A good beginning is half the work.

Me too!! I have free 'rogue' plants! Where I hadn't dug my potatoes well enough I found some pea-sized spuds with a shoot out of it - I moved these to the other veg bed and topped the bed with home-made compost.
I can now see three tomato plants in between the stir fry mix and spinach! Oh, and more stray potato plants popping up! Freebies!!!!!

You just gotta' learn the difference between 'crop rotation' and 'rotavation'. They mean two different things
