Potatoe Advice

This year I just grew whatever came to hand first when I was in the garden centre as I had no idea what I was doing. They turned out to be Maris Peer and were OK (but slugs attacked them a lot) but I wanted to be more adventurous next year as I've enjoyed it so much. I've decided not to bother too much about maincrop potatoes as I'm not sure they are good value for the effort / space that you would have to put in, although I might try one early maincrop.

Currently on my "probable" list are Kestrel, Vivaldi, Ulster Chieftan, Rooster and possibly one other, maybe one of the Mayan varieties (I think the Mayan ones are all early maincrops, otherwise can't remember off the top of my head which is what). I'm growing in open ground though. With container growing I would imagine that it's even less good value growing a maincrop as the yields will be lower. Only guessing though...

Kestrel. Can be second early and be left for a maincrop.

Bloomin' brilliant. Very little slug attack and make lovely chips and roasties.
