One of the main reasons you earth up is to stop light getting to any tubers which are forming. If they're planted close together then the light can't get to them anyway as they are shaded by the foliage so you're fine. This has always been my approach, much less work . That said, if they are too close together then you'll get small spuds as they won't get the nutrients they need - how close have you planted?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

If you can see tubers on the soil surface you could add a mulch of something to exclude light, such as thin layers of grass, damp newspapers, compost etc.
