  • Potato question

I have been chitting my potato's for a while and they are coming along nicely. I know tattieman said to plant about 6 weeks later. I am having an operation on the 23rd Feb and wont be able to do very much for 6 weeks ( didnt know op would be in such a short time ) Can I plant my potatoes out next week at my allotment or is it too early, I live in the south west so the weather tends to be warmer, and we havent had the cold weather most of you have been having of late. Already told OH he will have to help me.

    Hi Jackie
The RHS site is great for info and reading their advice you will be on the cusp of the appropriate planting time.

Jackie, it is all dependent on the soil temperature ... too wet & cold and your spuds will just rot in the ground

Get hubby to plant them out, at the appropriate time (end March ish). Or he gets no spuds for dinner all year

Oh the question I hate to answer- Can I plant them now. I would hate to tell you to plant them and we get some more freaky weather and you lose them so what I would suggest is pop half of them in and then get the OH to plant the rest at the normal time.
If the soil temperature was ok then they would grow but if it is too cold they will just sit there and do nothing. I know it is kind of a sitting on the fence answer but I would hate for you to lose them all. THere are customers in Devon who have potatoes growing in poly tunnels.

I have a new prepared bed which is currently under cardboard/black ground cover and has been for the past 2/3 weeks. I shall shortly be covering the lot with cloches. I was hoping that the soil would be warm enough under the cloches for me to plant out some earlies in mid-late Feb and then cover again with the cloches. I shall need this groundfor my broccoli and brussels to follow so I was thinking that the earlier I get the spuds in then out the earlier I can have the ground read for the other veg. Not a good idea??????
