  • Potato fruits!

I have an unauthorized potato plant - it must have grown from a long-forgotten potato plant from years ago. I don't think I've planted potatoes in that spot in the nearly-three-years that we've lived here - and it's producing fruit! I've googled and it seems these things are the 'true' fruit of the potato plant, the part we eat being simply swollen roots. They're poisonous so inedible and no use for producing new plants, but I'm fascinated as I had no idea potatoes did this!
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

You can sow the seed in those fruits and grow your own spuds Read more about it at

Thanks VC. The article I read said they were no good for sowing as the plants wouldn't come true from them. I'm completely in the dark as I have no idea what the variety is as I didn't plant them, and I haven't harvested those potatoes yet. Thanks for link.

They do not come true as they are the product of cross pollination.
What you get is a new potato variety - eventually.

Other then GM that is how they produce new varieties with new characteristics and resistances to diseases.

Take variety A that tastes good, cross pollinate with variety B that has blight resistance and hope that the cross, C, tastes good and had blight resistance. Just doesn't work out that easy.
