    possibly very daft potato questions...

    sorry for all my daft questions.....how do i know when to "dig" up my potatos? i use the word dig lightly coz they are in potato sacks do i leave some in the sacks or dig them all up at once? can i keep any to plant again or do i need to buy new seed potatos next year?

    If your spuds have flowered, or have been in for over 12 weeks, have a furtle about in the soil and see if you can find any potatoes. Harvest as many as you need at a time and leave the smaller ones to grow a bit longer.

    It is best to buy new seed spuds each year but if you are growing in containers, I don't suppose keeping a few of your own will be a problem. You will need fresh compost each year though.

      They'll be ready to lift when the plant has flowered and the foliage starts to die back. You'll need new 'seed' for next year ie. potatoes. I sometimes keep 'seed' from one crop and then use it the following year. If you decide to do this choose healthy potatoes about the size of those you planted this year. If not, buy more from your local GC etc next year.
      A good beginning is half the work.
      Praise the young and they will make progress.
