I planted electric red onions back in Autumn, now the snow and ice has gone I noticed that the small red bulb has almost disappeared leaving what looks like a spring onion. Additionally, some of them have been up-rooted and are laying on the surface exposing their roots! What has up-rooted them and will they survive if I replant them? Also, will those still rooted survive?

The bulbs have started to grow, that's the green part. The little bulb you planted is the food store to start the plant off. I would tuck the uprooted ones back in if the soil isn't too frozen - probably playful birds - they are devils for tweaking the tips out of the soil.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to? -

It's not necessarily birds: mine do it inside the gh, and there's no birds in there. You shouldn't push the bulb in when you plant, because then the roots grow and force the bulb back UP, out of the soil.

I planted 50 Red something or other of Taylor's onions last autumn, but I didn't have any in spring.
So I didn't plant any this autumn, but I bought some from Poundland the other day, so hopefully I'll do better from a spring planting?Comment
