  • Please tell me it's not blight.1

These black spots are travelling through my entire crop. It doesn't look like the blight I had last year which were much bigger spots. What do you think?

Could be magnesium deficiency Bill, try giving them a foliar feed.
Tablespoon of Epsom salts in a gallon of water & spray it onto the leaves.

Edit.I guess the plants are in containers ? are you feeding them ?

I've had very similar spots on my potatoes before Bill, and it didn't turn into blight. Like Bearded Bloke says, it looks more like magnesium deficiency.

My thoughts too, a deficiency of something.

Yes they are in large 45 lt containers (potatoes I forgot to mention) They had some Vitax pellets and BFB when I planted them, nothing since. Going by the lush green growth I didn't think they needed anything else. I thought a deficiency of some sort but doesn't that just cause yellow leaves, not spots?

The other thing is it is going from one plant to another which indicated to me a disease.

Excessive use of potassium-containing fertilisers is another cause. When potassium is present in high concentrations in the soil, it is absorbed in preference to magnesium.

Well I will try the Epsom salts tomorrow and see how it goes. I have some Sarpo Mire (blight resistant) and they don't seem affected. Yet.

Are there darks splodges on the stems. Does't look like blight which seems to start at the edges of leaves.

Looks like nutrient deficiency to me too. Bill I have found out over time that no matter what you start off with in the compost it's still dead at about 6 weeks.

I start with dried FYM and a hand full of pelleted potato fertiliser and still have to feed after week 6/7 dependent on whether we have had a lot of rain which will of course leech the compost anyway.

It certainly doesn't look like the blight I had last year, but I have seen pictures of blight that do look like this, could it be early blight, is that a different strain to late blight. I shall go the deficiency route unless it progress to horrible proportions.

I presume the plants are outdoors ? if so first thing in the morning while the leaf still has surface dampness, look at the underside of the leaf,if it is blight there will be a white halo around each spot according to the good Dr. Hessayon
