  • Please help identify this plant

Can anyone suggest what this plant is that has appeared in a friend's vegetable garden in Cornwall. It appears to have flowers that last about a day and then it has two sepals that have a black round 'fruit' developing. The flowers are a very light blue and white. Sorry Taff, I don't think it's a Physalis. Don't know what it is though. Just had a quick google. I thought maybe some kind of bellflower but apparently not.

I have seeds for this plant if anyone's interested?
I grew it last year...I think it's related to the cape gooseberry/ tomatillo but it's not edible.

Could it be Ipomoea (Morning Glory)?

No, it's the shoo fly plant

The flowers look similar but the physalis-ish fruits give it away.

It sure is Nicandra. We found one growing on rough ground in a nearby park. Didn't come again this year though. Gorgeous shade of blue.

I would love to have a goo at this if you really do have some spare seeds. Shall I pm you for and address to send a SAE?

It grows all over the allotments given the chance...amazingly quick swamping growth.....I have always considered it a bit of a (albeit pretty) pain. Although I had heard it called 'shoofly;' it didn't really register... then a lady suggested I place a small vase of it in the kitchen....and I have to say it worked well...hardly seen any flies at all...got to keep harvesting though as it doesn't that last long in water....(don't know if it works with whitefly like the link suggests...always used marigolds but i'll trial it on the Brussels this week)

...shame it doesn't work with wasps too!...paper bags/fake nests etc don't seem that good either when there is tempting food about.
