  • Planting out cabbages

I've got some cabbage seedlings, too many obviously, but I'll be planting them out before long, and my question is...
I read somewhere on here that you can plant up to the first leaves [I've searched but can't find it]. Is this the case? And if it is, can you do the same with kale?

    Yes, and yes.
Plant up to the first leaves, otherwise they get a bit wobbly in the winds.
Also, earth up the stems as the plants grow, because they get a bit top heavy.

Wot she said, if you have an open site they can suffer with wind rock, so get em in deep.

Yup, an old lottie man once told me that you can't plant 'em too deep or too firm.

I grew some seedlings that I didn't expect to do anything! and now have 4 x primo cabbages...they are under cloche just now, but the advice about earthing up is fantastic - will do that tomorrow! thanks, dee

Planted out black kale, all year cauliflower and January king cabbage today, as I have run out of prepared beds I have scattered them amongst other stuff that should be finished by the time they get too big...or thats the plan?!
