  • Plant onion sets when?>

Quick question. When can I plant onion sets? Anytime now or definately wait till after any risk of frost.
    Thanks.

I put mine in about March when it starts to warm up a bit and the ground is not waterlogged. They are frost hardly though.

Ok Hazel thanks for that. I was hoping to hear they are frost hardy as I would like to put them in now so I can harvest earlier.Wond er if anyone is gonna say there is no earlier harvest whether planted in February or late March.

you can also start them off in seed trays, side by side,in modules or half a loo roll middle each, this will get the roots going, they easy to plant with a trowl, after all, when you see the grreen shoots, the roots are good, and you know were they are without the birds pulling them up,

Good advice Dolly but not a practical idea in my case as I have about 900 sets to plant. I stretch chicken wire over the newly planted sets at about 3inches above the soil to stop squirrels and birds and cats disturbing them.

I don't think that there is any advantage to planting in Feb rather than March if the weather is like this. Things tend to catch up once Spring is here, and you risk them rotting if the ground is really wet.

what are you going to do with 900 onions . I grow a lot of onions but only a fraction of what you intend planting.

Aberdeen - I do give some away to friends and neighbours but i use the vast marjority of them - remember they have to last from last harvest to the next.
