  • Phacelia won't germinate

Last year I had great success using Phacelia tanecifolia as a green manure. This yeear, I just can't get it to germinate .... other than the odd seedling or two. I have created a lovely till, broadcast sown and raked it in then watered. Any ideas why it is so stubborn? I have done this three times over the past three weeks and hardly anything - is it too warm this time of year? Surely not.

I've had that happen with repeated alfalfa sowings. It would be worth covering with netting in case, just maybe birds are eating the seed.

My own phacelia is self-sown, and comes up everywhere but not all year round, it definitely has its own seasons, eg there are no new seedlings during the summer ~ they come in spring and autumn

Or maybe slugs are grazing the newly emerged seedlings off over-night before you even see them. And slugs will graze on the actual seeds too.

      Endless wonder.
