  • Perpetual spinach

I have noticed that spinach (perpetual) is the one crop that always seems to be pest free.
No green/black fly, snails, slugs, cabbage whites & my crop has not been attacked by birds.
This means I will be like Popeye before too long.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

Is perpetual spinach the same as spinach beet?

I lost a few seedlings to slimies, but they do seem to leave the established plants alone.

yes it is the same thing as leaf beet / spinach beet / spinach chard / beta vulgaris / the plant of many names... Easy to grow and very nice, one of the few salad leaves I've had success with this year!
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

The deer love it! They have stripped my plants a couple of times this year but it just keeps growing back.

I've found the same thing! The lettuce on either side has been chomped to bits but nothing has touched the spinach!

My leaf/spinach beet is quite popular amongst the garden wildlife, unfortunately.

It gets blackfly, leaf miner and snail/ slug attack. Oh, and pigeons will have a go too!

Perhaps I need some lettuce as a sacrificial crop
