hi all this is my first post and i am currently doing a horticulture course at Dundee Tech college and have been a keen chilli plant grower for 4 years. Anyway to the question this might be a dumb answer or a logical one depends if its right but can you not plant a whole peppercorn and the plants grow from that i have heard that they grow in hot countries and are treated like a weed also do they not grow on like vines or something similar.

They are mainly grown in India........very hard to grow in UK even in greenhouse as temp is too LOW!
Once used for currency purposes hence 'peppercorm rent' The peppercorm isn't actually a corm but a fruit I think?

Try mail@agroforestry.co.uk and check out their website, they have three varieties of Chinese/Japanese pepper bushes which they say can be substituted for the "tropical" type of pepper and they can be grown in this country outdoors.
Also worth looking at for the staggering range of trees/shrubs they carry, offering up all sorts of possibilities to try.
        best wishes

If you let me have your address in a pm or email I will send you some peppercorn seeds in the post, incidently they are from reimer seeds in america, but I was buying quite a few other seeds so it offset the postage.
But like has bee said they need heat, not sure about once the plant is established but I kow they take about 2 or 3 years to actually produce peppercorns.
