Pepper relocation ?

    Pepper relocation ?

    Just been out tying up my tomato's they are all about 18" to 24" tall and growing fairly happily, 2 rows in front I have 8 peppers. These went in at or about the same time and are looking at me wondering why I expect them to do anything as energetic as grow.

    Basically in 2 months they have done close to nothing, one or two might have but nothing that could be considered significant. More along the lines of those 2 might be a bit bigger but not sure.

    So the question, would it make sense to purchase a load of 10" pots from Wilko and put the peppers in these?

    Peppers would really appreciate not being outside.
    If you can't move them into a greenhouse or tunnel. I would buy a cloche rather than pots. Something like this

      What variety are they? Some varieties are better than others. Californian wonder peppers, everyone seems to try these, are useless (imo )!

        No chance of being inside anything, even a small enclosure is not a realistic option, simply no where for anything to be located. Might be an option to consider for next year as there is one position but access to it is not simple

        Varieties more or less unknown, 3 I know are Marconi Red (maybe 4) as I grew them. If I recall I had some others growing but they suffered an accident. To make the numbers up I bought a few from the local market and B&Q when in or passing. These tended to just say "Pepper", occasionally Red or Yellow.

        To an extent it seems pointless having a row of peppers that just sit there occupying space. Would like to see some advancement from them.

          Could you make a plastic cover? Make a frame and cover over with plastic? Just to keep them a little warmer.
          Ive given up with growing peppers outside, to be honest I think chillies crop better outside than peppers and you can grow a mild one. We have had a cold, long Spring which hasn't helped. I don't think putting in pots will help, though it is early days yet..we've got July and August to go and we will get some sun.

            It's been a long cool damp spring or even summer, this is not really pepper weather yet so I'm not suprised they are struggling. An advantage of having peppers in pots is that you can water the tomatos next to them extensivly but (normally) around the end of June dry the potted peppers out to shock them into reproducing, once they flower/set you recommence watering to fatten up the fruit. mine are in the greenhouse and potted but still only about 9" tall so don't panic it's a slow start and probbably too short a season to be a great one now.

              How tall are they now? Plus the obvious question: have you been feeding them?

              So long as it's not too windy and wet, you should do OK having them outside in your location. If your toms are doing OK, your peppers should too.

              Mine are starting to bush out now, but they're not much taller than ESBkevin's. They went in at the same time as the toms, which are now 60 cm and taller.

                I've never managed to get peppers to grow in the ground,has to be in pots. The ground might be too cold? Even in a raised bed they didn't produce anything,in a pot surrounded by petunia,geranium they look really nice & like the shelter/humid conditions of the other plants. I'd put a few in pots.

                  They are like bleedin' weeds in my greenhouse! Going to be eating my first 5 peppers in about a week or two as they are full size green right now, and about to turn.

                  I like the more fancy peppers, but they never seem quite as prolific, and the good old Californian Wonder is more than adequate for the vast amounts of mexican food we eat

                    My chillies are having some buds, but my sweet peppers are doing nothing. I just repotted both into 12 l pots.

                        Same here Ryez, plenty of flowers on my chillies, not much luck on the peppers so far...they are always way behind the chillies.

                          I'm going to have more peppers than I can possibly eat shortly, especially as I have another of last year's plants with ripening fruit on the kitchen windowsill and one of each sort in my friend's greenhouse which are a little behind these.

                          I think you would be better potting the peppers up and planting something else near the tomatoes - its not too late for all sorts of salad veg or something like florence fennel.

                            My peppers too are way, way smaller than chillis which seem to be doing really well - one of my jobs for today is potting peppers into 10L pots - see if that encourages them..!
                            I'd not even thought about planting peppers outside .... mine are still coddled in the GH - and that's where they'll stay!
