Peppadew pepper

I am a little confused on the Peppadew Pepper.
I was under the impression that it is a re-named S. African variety but now I am hearing it is a hybrid. Does anyone here know which it is?

People in the States (including me) are going nuts trying to get seed for it.
Would love to know the history of it.
