Picked my first, what I thought were ripe pods, today. They seemed swollen and ready to eat. However, on opening the pods, the peas were tiny! Should I leave them much longer until the pods look like they are going to explode or is it a weather related thing?

They always do this, you'll get used to when they're really ready
The pod seems to swell to allow more room for the peas to get bigger. You can give them a gentle squeeeze to feel what's inside or if there's any sunshine
hold them up to it and you can see the shape of the peas inside

No!..... I don't pick it, I just hold the pod away from the stem so it's in the sunlight

I find the pods always look ready before they really are and that as already said the best way is to gently squeeze them.

i fund peas a bit wierd for me. the pods have 2 or 3 peas inside and some only 1... is that normal with this weather?i think is because i plant them so many and i forgot to thin them out... i have some more sown and they already look better and tall. will see.Comment

Ah, thanks for the tips guys. Guess I'll have to fight the temptation and let them swell a bit longer! It's a hard thing to do, I always want to pick stuff as soon as they seem ready! heheComment

I eat the pods and peas like mangetout, when the peas inside are still small. There may be a little string that you have to remove, along the outside of the pod, but its worth a go!Comment
