  • peas and guttering

hi is it to late to plant peas, and how deep in guttering do they have to be sown? In all the books I've read it says to sow at a depth of 2" but my gutter is 2" deep in total which means they would sit on the bottom.

Peas should be OK to be planted in the open now, main problem is beasties nicking the seeds before they germinate. If you sow in lengths of guttering under cover 1" deep should be OK. What sort of guttering have you got? They're usually 3 or 4 inches deep.

if you do grow in guttering the easiest way to slide them out is to give them a good soaking and you will find they slide out easiley and does work just right for early crops

Do you make drainage holes in the guttering? Daft question but then I am daft! I'll come clean!

I tried this method for the first time this year. I tried putting them out yesterday and they would not come out of the drainpipe tried wriggling, stretching, banging and pushing but try as I might I could not get them to budge. I gave up in the end and fed them to the chickens will sow direct in future

Hot poker! Cor, it sounds like a medieval way of getting rid of unwanted kings and despots! Note to self - Where do you get a poker in these days of central heating? Thanks LJ - I must have missed this.

put me peas in 4' lengths,1 of kelverdon and 1 of sugersnap. I didnt make drainage holes as i dont have a poker, redhot or otherwise (ooer missus). However ducktaped cardboard on the ends so this may act as drainage when cardboard fails and falls off.
